Want to make art but enjoy the fresh air? You can do both! That’s what plein air and urban sketching are all about.

Plein air painting is the practice of painting or drawing outside in nature. This was popularized by the French Impressionists (think Monet!). The novelty and availability of paint in tubes made this a possibility for the first time in history. Plein air is usually a single, larger format painting focusing on capturing light and color.

Urban sketching is similar in that artists go “out in the wild.” However, these creators will typically create in a sketchbook with the goal of telling a story.
